Thank you Senators Collins and Dorgan for introducing the Special Diabetes Program (SDP) (S. 3058) bill which would provide $200 million each year for the next 5 years for research, development of therapies, and treatment methods to help type 1 diabetics treat the disease in the long term.

Sen. Dorgan, founder of the Senate Diabetes Caucus, and Sen. Collins made us proud today. Urge your Senator to support the Special Diabetes Program. The bill would also provide $200 million a year for treatment initiatives targeted to American Indian and Alaska Native populations, groups that are particularly hard hit by diabetes.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month’s annual campaign, “Birth Defects Prevention Month.” This year, January 2010, the focus is…

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month’s annual campaign, “Birth Defects Prevention Month.” This year, January 2010, the focus is on diabetes.

Info from the campaign:

“Diabetes is often diagnosed in women during their childbearing years and can affect the health of both the mother and her unborn child. Poor control of diabetes in a woman who is pregnant increases the chances for birth defects and other problems for the baby (4). Proper health care before and during pregnancy can help prevent birth defects associated with risks, including diabetes, and other poor outcomes, such as miscarriage or stillbirth.

Birth defects affect approximately one in 33 newborns and are a leading cause of infant mortality in the United States (1,2). Lifetime care for all infants born in a single year with one or more of 17 severe birth defects has been estimated at $6 billion (3).”

Please see their website for additional information: http://www.nbdpn.org/current/resources/bdpm2010.html

We’re thrilled that the 2009 Dodging Diabetes Charity Dodgeball tournament was such a success and that over 300 people came together to support our cause and to help fund diabetes research, treatment and education. Together we’re proud to announce we raised over $9,000 for the Joslin Diabetes Center.

And what a better way to end this year’s tournament than today’s announcement by President Obama that he will be ending the ban on stem cell research. We’re hopeful that this will lead to further diabetes research.
