The Dodging Diabetes Charity Dodgeball Tournament website has been awarded a Silver 2010 Communicator Award by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. The Communicator Awards is the leading international awards program honoring creative excellence for communications professionals. Founded by communication professionals over a decade ago, The Communicator Awards is an annual competition honoring the best in advertising, corporate communications, public relations and identity work for print, video, interactive and audio. The 2010 Communicator Awards received more than 7,000 entries from ad agencies, interactive agencies, production firms, in-house creative professionals, graphic designers, design firms, and public relations firms–making it one of the largest awards of its kind in the world.

Great Gazette story about Dodgeball:
“Two downcounty residents are celebrating their fifth year raising money for diabetes research and awareness through a unique fundraiser — a charity dodgeball tournament.

Inspired by the 2004 movie “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” Bethesda resident Anna Tiedeman Irwin and Chevy Chase resident Elizabeth Kramer launched the “Dodging Diabetes” event after watching both of their younger brothers struggle with Type I diabetes. Irwin, a 1996 Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart graduate, and Kramer, a 1995 Holton-Arms School graduate, connected when their mothers met at a diabetes fundraising event. The two decided they wanted to do something a little different to raise money and awareness about the disease.

“The movie had just come out, and I had this idea — what if we could do a dodgeball tournament, something everyone could participate in with no skill required?” said Irwin.”

Thank you to the 33 teams and more than 500 athletes, fans, volunteers, sponsors and refs who came out on Saturday to make the 5th Annual Dodging Diabetes Charity Dodgeball Tournament a total success. Together we raised more than $13,000 for the Joslin Diabetes Center for research, treatment and education.

Fundraising Happy Hour 3/4/10

Please join us on Thursday, March 4th for a charity happy hour at Blackfinn Bethesda between 5:30pm and 8pm to raise money for Dodging Diabetes. There will be free pints, drink specials, and raffle prizes. Additionally, registration for the March 20 Dodging Diabetes tournament on March 20 is only $300 in person. Please come with a check made out to Dodging Diabetes if you wish to register at the reduced rate at Happy Hour. The event is sponsored by Chase Kickball and Newcastle beer.

Set up your own fundraising page!

One of the most exciting changes to dodgeball this year is the opportunity to set up your own fundraising page. Teams and individual players will have their own page, but ANYONE can set up a page through active.com to send to friends and family for fundraising.

If you want to set up a dodgeball fundraising page (100% of donations go directly to Joslin) follow these steps:

1. Click “Click here to donate to Dodging Diabetes 3rd Annual Dodgeball Tournament” This will open a new window.

2. At the top of the page, click: “Become a Fundraiser” then “Fundraise as an Individual”

3. Follow the instructions to customize your fundraising page and email the finished product to your friends and family.
