Trend spotting: type 1 extreme sportabetics
February 23, 2010Today’s WSJ article about olympic skiier Kris Freeman shines light on what we know is already happening – people living with type 1 diabetes pushing the limits of physical sports. “Even as rates of Type 2, or “adult onset,” diabetes skyrocket in the U.S. because of obesity and physical sluggishness, a culture of extreme exercise is taking hold among Type 1 diabetics, replete with specialized coaches and training camps”… AND DODGEBALL TOURNAMENTS.
We know this through our friends at triabetes, insulindependence and Clara Barton wilderness adventure camps and marathoners like Melissa White and Missy Foy not to mention the huge number of type 1 athletes that participate in our annual dodgeball tournament. Thank you Kris for bringing global attention to the trememdous accomplishments people with type 1 are making in endurance sports every day.
